Last season couldn't have gone much worse for McCarthy, who not only flamed out but watched the man he replaced, Sam Darnold, win the Super Bowl in Seattle. McCarthy missed seven games with various injuries and finished among the dregs of the league in nearly every passing stat, including completion percentage where he was last among 33 qualified passers (57.6). Inaccuracy was the main problem. He ranked 32nd in on-target percentage (65.4) and completed just 25.8 percent (28th) of his deep attempts despite his receivers ranking fourth in the league in downfield open percentage. His efficiency might turn with simply more short passes -- no QB threw 10-plus yards at a higher rate (42.4%) as his 9.3-yard average target depth led the league. The Vikings signed Kyler Murray this offseason, but considering Murray's injury history, chances are decent McCarthy is back under center at some point. McCarthy was basically a rookie last year after missing 2024 with a knee injury, so he's by no means a finished product. But he needs to significantly improve his accuracy to salvage his prospects.
