Murray was a pleasant surprise for the Trail Blazers in his rookie season back in 2023. He played 21.7 minutes a night as a defensive stopper and got that total up to a career-high 23.4 minutes a game last year. That bump is no surprise with how shorthanded that roster was at times, with Murray starting throughout most of December. Unfortunately, he fell out of the rotation late in the year and was likely looking at a similar role if he remained in Portland. That's why Murray was part of the Ja Morant trade, and he'll look to carve out a similar role in Memphis. There are more opportunities there than almost any team in the NBA, with Murray competing against Cedric Coward, Ty Jerome, Jerami Grant, GG Jackson, Jaylen Wells, Cam Boozer and Taylor Hendricks for wing minutes. That's one of the weakest rotations in the NBA, and it's anyone's guess to see how things play out. In that 23-minute role, Murray averaged 5.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.9 steals per game. It's unclear if we'll see similar averages this season, simply because this rotation has more question marks than any other in the league. In any case, Murray should be leaned on simply due to his defense and could be a sneaky source of steals if he carves out a decent role.
