The 2025-26 season was again defined by Embiid's availability rather than his ability. Coming off April 2025 arthroscopic knee surgery, he opened the year on a strict minutes cap and never once played both ends of a back-to-back. He looked rusty early (four points in the opener) before rounding into form. His January was vintage, featuring a 40-point night, his first triple-double of the season, and multiple 30-plus outings as Philadelphia won 10 of 14 with him active. But the interruptions never stopped. A nine-game knee absence in November, a 13-game oblique strain beginning in late February, and finally an April appendectomy that ended his regular season at just 38 games (26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 blocks in 31.6 minutes). He gutted through the playoffs post-surgery, helping upset Boston in seven before laboring visibly in a second-round loss to New York. It was his second straight injury-wrecked campaign after a 19-game 2024-25. Looking ahead to 2026-27, the caveats are louder than ever. Embiid enters his age-33 season having failed to clear 40 games in either of the last two years, with a surgically repaired knee the organization clearly prioritizes protecting for the postseason. Expect the load management - capped minutes, sitting back-to-backs - to remain a permanent feature rather than a temporary measure. The roster around him has also deepened, with Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, Anfernee Simons and a maturing VJ Edgecombe joining Tyrese Maxey. That talent reduces the team's need to lean on him and could trim his usage, but it also gives Philadelphia every reason to keep him fresh instead of running him into the ground. The per-game upside remains elite, but the risk has fully overtaken the reward. Treat Embiid as a high-variance mid-round gamble, and only draft him if you can pair him with a reliable second center to absorb the inevitable absences.
