Fantasy Outlook

Fields is on his third team in three years after being traded to Kansas City in March. The Chiefs should at least provide a better framework for success than what he's had heretofore, though his opportunity hinges on Patrick Mahomes' return from a late-season ACL injury. Fields will start for as long as Mahomes' rehab lingers, which likely will be beyond Week 1. In New York last year, Fields was benched Week 12 before being placed on IR with a knee injury. His biggest issue was an inability to go downfield. His 6.8-yard average target depth ranked 32nd of 36 QBs with at least 200 attempts, and no quarterback targeted downfield receivers at a lower rate than Fields' 23.5 percent. Mahomes didn't stretch the field much either last season, but that was more by design whereas Fields' short-target game stemmed from Jets disfunction. His rushing prowess still played, ranking eighth among QBs in rushing yards despite only nine games. Elite rushing coupled with a competent offense makes Fields a decent draft-day flyer in two-QB leagues if Mahomes isn't ready.
