Fantasy Outlook

Herbert finished QB10 last season thanks to unexpected rushing production. He was second among quarterbacks with a career-high 498 rushing yards, most of which came from scrambling while he was under heavy duress all season. The Chargers' offensive line was injured and ineffective, leading to an incredible 32 line changes as Herbert was pressured on a league-high 43.3 percent of dropbacks and sacked 54 times (3rd). The Chargers now anticipate turning their weakness into a strength, with standout tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt both on track for Week 1 after the former missed all of last season and the latter played just six games. The interior line may also improve, thanks to free-agent signing Tyler Biadasz and second-round pick Jake Slaughter. If things go well for the team, Herbert will trade some of last year's scramble yards for more passing production, benefiting both from the blocking upgrade and a better scheme under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. The innovative play-caller should put the strong-armed Herbert in a better position to succeed, using pre-snap motion, play-action and an improved running game to create space for receivers. The latter was a problem last year as Chargers receivers ranked 28th in separation, averaging 3.2 yards. They also dropped 28 passes (30th), but the team did little to improve the receiving corps, adding fourth-round speedster Brenen Thompson as depth behind Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Tre' Harris. Assuming the offensive line holds up, the accurate and efficient Herbert should thrive in a more explosive offense.
