Smith put up career-high numbers in points and threes during the 2025-26 season, averaging 10.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 0.8 blocks and 1.5 three-pointers in 20.7 minutes per game. Prior to a calf strain that caused him to endure multiple absences down the stretch, Smith had carved out a starting role, during which time he was considered a must-roster player across most formats. While this was certainly encouraging, it doesn't appear as though he will maintain a starting role heading into the 2026-27 season, following the offseason acquisition of Nic Claxton. After having played his entire career in Brooklyn, Claxton will be looking for a fresh start as the starting center in Chicago, meaning Smith will have to compete for backup minutes against the returning Zach Collins. Assuming this is indeed the case, Smith won't need to be drafted in standard leagues.
