Hey Justin:
To throw a football properly and achieve a tight spiral, follow these core steps for grip, stance, and release:
1. The Grip
• Place your fingers: Put your ring finger and pinky finger across the laces near the back half of the ball. Rest your middle finger just above the laces and your index finger closer to the nose of the ball.
• Support with the thumb: Cup your thumb underneath the ball on the opposite side.
• Keep space: Avoid death-gripping the ball; leave a small gap between your palm and the football so it rolls out cleanly.
2. Stance and Footwork
• Set your base: Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart in an athletic, bent-knee stance.
• Align your body: Point your non-throwing shoulder (front shoulder) directly at your target.
• Transfer weight: Power starts from the ground up. Take a short, quick stride toward your target with your front foot while keeping your head behind your center of gravity.
3. The Throw and Release
• Generate torque: Bring the ball back past your ear while keeping your elbow close to your body. Rotate your hips through the motion before your shoulders turn to build velocity.
• Snap the wrist: As you push the ball forward, snap your wrist and thumb downward. Let the ball roll off your index finger last to impart spin.
• Follow through: Complete your motion by finishing with your throwing arm, elbow, and wrist pointing straight toward the target.
