The Pittsburgh Steelers proposed a change to the free-agent negotiation process at the league owners' meetings, which was approved on a one-year trial basis.
The new rule allows teams to have one video or phone call with up to five prospective unrestricted free agents during the negotiating window and book travel upon agreeing to terms.
Previously, clubs were restricted to contact only through agents until free agency began.
This change aims to add a layer of transparency to the process that many teams have been informally engaging in.
