AUCTION ADVICE - Folks, my most competitive league (12 team 1/2 PPR) is switching to auction for the first time. Any advice/strategies? In mock drafts the thing I’m struggling with is having ~$15 after 5 rounds. Is that normal?

Auction is much more fun than snake.
I would want to target 1 guy in the top 6 or so. But try to make it the cheapest of the group…so pass on Jefferson and Chase, and then go after say Tyreek assuming he ends up cheaper than those two. Then again target a guy now around pick 12. But again make sure you don’t pay more than 7-11 went for. Then target another at around 18-20. Same strat.
If you can do that, you’ve managed to effectively have two firsts or two seconds, and didn’t pay a stupid amount for it.

Oh! And do not leave the draft room. Else the AI will take over bidding in your absence. You will end up blowing your budget on a guy you didn’t want and don’t need

Don’t hold your money. I think having a bunch of $10-15 players is worse than having 2 $50-60 players and just filling out the rest with values as they fall and $1-$5 players later.

It’s a general rule that the last guy in a tier will go for more than he should. Don’t be afraid to go after the top guys. They are usually a better value than the guys who go later.
People, generally, won’t be quite so adamant in bidding hard for a player if there’s still another guy on the board that they like.
DO NOT nominate “value” guys early. If you want Waller or Dotson or Flowers, do not nominate them early. They will generally go for a higher price when a lot of bidders still have fat budgets.

Also, I would nominate players that you DO want in the early rounds. Get your guys. Then nominate players from positions you have already filled to bleed the budgets of others.

There are different strategies, but I’d recommend spending up for studs early. Sounds like that’s what you are doing, so I’m on board with that. Just remember, those low cost players in mocks will not go so cheaply in a live auction. In mocks, most people quit to autodraft and the AI won’t bid a player above their site value.
Example: on ESPN, Jahan Dotson is a $4 player. In mocks v AI, you can get him for $4. In live auction v human competitors, he will cost $12+. Zay Flowers is a $1 play on ESPN. In a live auction, he will cost $10+. Something to keep in mind if you were counting on filling out your roster with players like that on the cheap

Try and get a top 12 player, have a plan, nominate players you don’t want
