The player cannot practice, play in games, or attend team activities.
The player continues to receive their salary and benefits.
The roster spot doesn't count against the team's 53-man active roster, so the team can replace the player.
It's not a suspension or a finding of guilt. Being placed on the list is an administrative decision, often made while legal proceedings or the NFL's own investigation are ongoing.
When is it used?
The Commissioner may place a player on the exempt list when:
They're facing serious criminal charges.
They're under investigation for alleged misconduct that could violate the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy.
Their presence on the field could undermine the integrity of the league while the facts are being determined.
Is it punishment?
Not officially. The exempt list is intended to be temporary and precautionary, not disciplinary. If the NFL later concludes the player violated league policies, the player may still receive a suspension or other discipline afterward.
