I think they give leonard a chance. Rivers worked with him predraft so maybe its just a mentor/emergency qb thing

Phillip Rivers signing was for if Leonard has to miss time going forward at any point.
but the main reason River's instead of Tanahill ext. Riley Leonard has worked with River's in college in summer QB coaching school.
River's knows the offense like the back of his hand and brings juice to the locker room and QB room that invigorates the entire team for playoff push.
Smart move !
