In the NFL, if a receiver catches a pass and laterals it backwards to another player who then runs it into the endzone for a touchdown, the score is credited as a passing touchdown to the original quarterback who threw the ball, as the lateral is considered part of the same play and the initial catch is the key factor for scoring purposes; the player who lateraled the ball does not get credit for the touchdown.
